This series is comprised of a disparate group of records relating to water control, canal structures, and contracts. More specifically, the series contains miscellaneous land and water files, materials relating to Barge Canal contracts, memoranda and correspondence, reservoir and lake water elevations, power house manuals, canal permits, water control reports, structural insepection and condition reports, emergency action plans, water intake and hydroelectric reports, Barge Canal and Terminal estimate books, transportation progress reports, and assorted plans and ledgers.

Although surveys were made when the reservoir system was created by the Department of Public Works to serve the state canal system (early 19th through 20th century), the boundary lines of state property were not clearly defined, especially in the Adirondack region. In the early 1990s the Thruway Authority was mandated to conduct a comprehensive survey to clearly establish the state's property lines.
